Was birth not registered for Bridget McCabe?
« on: Thursday 04 January 18 15:29 GMT (UK) »
I went to Durham archives a good while back and found the baptism and birth date of my Great Grandmother Bridget McCabe at Our Lady Immaculate & St Cuthbert (RC).  Census has her birthplace as Crook.

Her parents are recorded as Bernard and Margaret McCabe nee Hoey.  Her birth date is given as 29 September 1854 and baptism as 1 October 1854.

However, when looking at freebmd I can't find her birth registered.  Could it be that her birth may not have been registered?

The first Statistician of the GRO  Dr. William Farr (1807–1883) estimated a 5% non-registration rate for births 1837-76, declining from  6.9% in 1841-50 to 1.8% in 1861-70.

Thanks Stan for letting me know.  I have just been trying to check for her siblings but they don't seem to have been registered either. ::)

Hello,
Do you have the other children’s births or baptisms?

Heywood

Sorry, just realised you have mentioned that.

There were two Bernard McCabes. - sometimes spelled Barnard:

One born 3 April 1853 bapt. 4 April 1853

Second born 14 June 1857 bapt. 21 June 1857

James McCabe born 1849

There was a Mary McCabe born 1845 but birth place was Ireland

Hi Rosie99,

I didn't see your post before I posted my last one.  This seems to be Bridget's brother.  Thanks so much.  This Would have been difficult to find given the odd spelling.  Amazing you found this!! :) :D

Parents were Irish so I wonder if this was an interpretation of how they sounded.
