Maybe someone can find out more details for Mary Hare in Taunton
« on: Thursday 04 January 18 15:34 GMT (UK) »
Maybe someone can find out more details for Mary Hare's early life? I have the following details from a researcher who helped me some years ago. He told me that William Hare married Martha Dudderidge 28 Nov 1826 St. James Taunton.

Source: Taunton Parish Records

Mary Hare baptised 30 Nov 1827. Taunton St Mary's, Page 26, Fiche; M2717/1 D/P tau.m. 2/1/6. bapt. No 208.
Parents William Hare and Mary of North Street, Taunton, Trade Labourer.

Mary Hare had an illegitimate child: The Bath Chronicle 26 July 1849
Richard Tanner, a carpenter, living in Walcot, was summoned by Mary Hare, as the alleged father of her illegitimate child. The defendant was ordered to pay 1s 6d a week for the support of the child. See also BofG Bastardy Orders 1844-1885   BGB/1/37/#0078BofG

Hoping that you find answers to the following questions if possible. :)

Are Martha & Mary the same person?
Can you find the house number where the Hare family lived in the North Street?
Mary Hare's date of birth?

Any other information about Mary Hare and her Family would be helpful.
Thank you in advance for anything found.

House numbering wasn't that common in the early 1800s? Just take a look at any 1841 census!
Baptisms in Parish Registers don't always show a date of birth - it simply wasn't important back then?

But, there is a Mary Hare (b1827) in the 1841 census in Bath ;D
Have you looked at that?

FamilySearch is playing up, so I can't see any details.

Marriage 27 Jan 1861 Walcot

William Pow widower and Mary Hare spinster - address 12 Chelsea Buildings (same address as Rosie found in 1851 census).

1861 census has them at same address William is a tailor , Mary is a needle woman and is showing as born in Taunton. 13 year old Eliza Pow is also recorded as a needle woman born Bath. The groindex shows no Eliza Pow born in Bath in 1847 or 1848 but there is a birth for Eliza Hare Jan - Mar 1848 (no mmn given).

On the parish record in Taunton for Mary Hare's baptism her mother's name is given as Martha. Two brothers, Charles and George were also baptised in Taunton in 1832(Charles was probably born two years previously).

Martha would indeed appear to be shown as Mary in the 1841 census.

The 1851 census has William Hare (surname transcribed as Huie!) 59 b Taunton, wife Martha  47 b Norton and children Geo 19 b Taunton, Jno 16 b Walcot, Sarah 14 b Walcot and Emily 7 b Walcot. (Gro index has her birth in Bath Dec 1843 -mmn Douderidge.  Search for other Hare births in Bath on the groindex and there are others with mmn of Dudderidge or a variation).

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Looking on transcribed records on wsom.org I cannot see the marriage at St James for William/Martha but the baptism for Mary 30/11/1827 St Marys, does show her parents as William and Martha Hare. North St. Father a Labourer.

Just found marriage St Marys for  William Hare and Martha Duddridge (from Norton Fitzwarren)28/11/1826. He, widower.
