John Henry Hill born 1757
« on: Thursday 04 January 18 15:55 GMT (UK) »
Haydock Hill a timber merchant in Craven Street, London had 8 sons. All surviving sons became merchants. I have traced the family trees of each branch except one.
John Henry Hill baptized March 29th in 1757 at St Martin in the Fields appeared as a legatee in his grandmother Mary Bosquet's will in 1781. He appeared in his mother Elizabeth Hill's will in 1820 and a daughter Elizabeth is mentioned.
One of his brothers James was a merchant in St Petersburg between 1783 and 1795.
Could John Henry have been a merchant abroad somewhere else which could explain his disappearance and not appearing in any wills of his brothers and sisters?
If he had a family, they may be looking still for his origins in London?
Any guesses would be welcome
Ted Hill

Transcriptions
John Hill son of Haydock and Elizabeth baptized 18 April 1757 St Martin in the Fields.

From his mothers will the daughter is Elizabeth Sophia Hill.

John may have had a falling out with the family as his daughter received 50 pounds whereas all other
grandchildren and god children received at least 100 pounds, some much greater amounts.

Dear Amondg,

Hadn't thought of a falling out. Should have. Eighty years later my Hill ancestor Philip Blundell Hill, eldest son of John Hill Lyme Regis, due to inherit father's Russia Merchant business. Instead, he married a shoemaker's daughter in Devon. He received an annuity of £50 a year.

Will try and trace Elizabeth Sophia the daughter.

Hello Ted,

Haydock Hill is one of my ancestors too.  I have only just begun to go back into the 18th century with the Hills, so I'm afraid I can't suggest what might have happened to John Henry Hill.

Prompted by this, though, I have had a closer look at what I have on the Bosquets and realised that I may have an error, oops, off to see if I can sort it out.

Thanks, Ted.  I think I've resolved the problem.  I'll get back to you about the Bosquets when I've done a bit more work on what I've got.  Of the Hills, my ancestor is John Hill Lyme Regis's brother Henry - if you're looking for anything on those siblings or Henry's descendants, let me know.

Dear Drosybont,
I assume you are a Todd or Westmacott descendant.
I would like to check up on my Henry branch soon but can I check first with what children he had? I believe I have 12 children ending with Frances in 1828, Alfred Octavius in 1835 and Charles James ? in 1842. Do I have this correct?
Regards
Ted Hill
P.S. I have just discovered that Nicolas Bosquet appears to have had two brothers Daniel & Pierre.

Hi Ted,

Yes, my descent is through the Westmacotts and the Todds.  And yes, I too think Henry Hill and Sarah Whishaw had 12 children:

James b 1815 d 1840?
Anne b 1817 d 1892
Emily b 1818 d 1910
Henry b 1820 d?
William b 1822 d 1847
Edward b 1824 d 1878
Alexander b 1826 d?
Frances b 1828 d 1900
Frederick b 1830 d 1875
Nicholas Stanton b 1832 d 1918
Alfred Octavius b 1835 d 1870
Charles James b 1842 d 1815

Not sure that the year of death I have for James is correct:  I found it in a tree online quite a while ago and haven't been able to find a record to confirm it yet.  I have some details for Henry and Alexander eg marriages, child/children, but haven't been able to find their deaths yet despite plenty of searching.

I got distracted from the Bosquets because some South Wales Chartist research I'm involved in got active again after a lull.  What I could see looked very interesting and I will get back to them when I can but it may not be for a while.

Best wishes,

Drosybont

Dear Drosybont,

I have info for Alexander. He was buried at Riga on Oct 12th, 1875.

Do you have much on Henry. Some years ago I had notes saying Henry separated from Eliza Carter and a rumour that he went to Australia. I have info which looks like confirmation of his getting to Victoria Australia but returning as a retired merchant in Lewisham in 1881 Census.

Regards

Ted
