Portsmouth Prison 1871
« on: Thursday 04 January 18 22:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I 'think' I may have a relative in Portsmouth Prison(?) in the 1871 census.
I have noted a person I am researching isn't around his local area (Derbyshire) around this time and a man matching the same name is in gaol in Portsmouth.
The name is Edward Dowd/Doud-born in Ireland (or Derbyshire) in 1845.
Does anyone have any prison records I could access please?

Thanks
Dowdy :)

Hi Dowdy

There is a record for a guy on one of the sub sites - here are the details

Edward DOWD  aged 19
DATE OF WARRANT: 14 Feb. 1865
OCCUPATION:   Marine
TRIED : At Gosport for feloniously wounding a James Slattery at Alverstoke February 1865

Found guilty and sentenced to 6 months hard labour at Winchester Gaol, Hampshire

I can't see anything for a later date, but the age of this man seems to suggest this could be an earlier crime he possibly committed and could be the man you are searching.

Criminal records are on the two main sub sites - Ancestry & F M P.

I 'think' I may have a relative in Portsmouth Prison(?) in the 1871 census.

Hampshire Advertiser, Saturday 19 November 1870
Murderous Assault on a Woman of the Town. – Edward Dowd, a private in the Royal Marines, was charged with a most atrocious assault on Elizabeth Carey, in St. Mary’s-street, Portsmouth, on Tuesday evening. The prosecutrix’s head and face presented unmistakable evidence of the brutal nature of the assault, and it was only on the interference of the police, that she was not murdered. Prisoner, a most repulsive looking fellow, had no answer to the charge, and was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour.
