For what it's worth but not really very confident ~

1900 census has him born January 1839 and 1905  as 1837. People tend to be more honest with their month of birth than their year of birth. There were these baptisms in January 1831-1839 for a Daniel M*cLeod

6 Jan 1832      to Daniel Mccleod and Catherine Colquhoun, Glasgow
25 Jan 1831    to Daniel Mcleod and Mary Shaw, Glasgow

(Too many Donalds!)

PS I've not checked the 1841-1861 censuses for him and if any disappeared from Scottish records.

You might have this but will put it up, just in case:

MCLEOD, Eliza. Spouse of Daniel. Born 1856, died 1901
MCLEOD, Daniel. Spouse of Eliza. Born 1836, died 1906

Main site may have some info tucked away:

(Daniel not in Salamanca in 1870 - I've checked their listing )

It includes some obituaries

Thank you, both of you. This gives me a few more pieces to the puzzle. Perhaps eventually I'll be able to find naturalization records or something else that will give his parents name or place of birth. I'm happy with what we have been able to find for now. Thanks again for your time and help!
