CDV of young and old woman for dating please
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 08:56 GMT (UK) »
Please could I have a date for this rather nice CVD?

Is the young woman holding a book? Does this have any significance?

Many thanks for any help.

Hi Jen...1870s would  be my guess going on the card stock but the fashion appears to be 1860s... it may be a photo album or a bible.

I thought 1860's but they could have the clothes for awhile.
Not sure about the book but as Carol said it could be a Bible.

It looks like a little tin box but could be a bible.

Yes my first thoughts too Al but the corners became round as opposed to square around 1870 to make them fit more easily into album sleeves. The object appears to have a clasp on the side and some embellishment on the front.

Late 1860s - early 1870s going by the clothing/stance. I'd think the back was 1860s too. The 1870s ones got more elaborate - but have a look here for the 1860s- early 1870s backs*:

* added - Roger Vaughan suggests that rounded corners were late 1870s :-\

Thanks Carol. I'm afraid my eyes aren't good enough for the box /Bible.

It's odd Carol, as you say there are different opinions on the corners. The clothing and pose is very much 1860s (why doesn't she take that bonnet off so that we can see/or not see, her ears!). The card stock is iffy - could it be a reprint of an earlier shot?

Added - on balance, early 1870s.  Do we know much about the photographer.   Also think it's a bible.
