In 1871 described as a 'Photographer employing 1 boy'

RG10/5145/69/21

I think Jennifer might know more about him as I think she's been collecting his work for a while  :)

Added - but by 1881 is a 'Chemist and druggist'

Many thanks to all of your for your input on this one.

Yes, Gibson also had a chemists shop. The shop was in existence until the 1970's. It's now a branch of 'White Stuff'. The ornate thingy over the shop-front in this photo http://www.rootschat.com/links/01l9w/ is still there.

From what I've been able find out he was mainly a landscape photographer, and concentrated mainly on this after the mid-1880's.

As to the date of this one, I've been checking on other Gibsons I've put up for dating, and interestingly there are three which were thought to be from the 1860 era but on what looked like 1870's cardstock.

Jim suggested that Mr Gibson might have been a bit ahead of the others re. rounded corners; possibly producing his own?  :-\

I would also suggest late 1860's. 1870's was the age of the bustle & she doesn't have one.
By the late 1860's younger women were discarding the crinoline, first the 3 top hoops & then the whole thing. This left a large unsupported skirt which is what can be seen here.
As for the rounded corners it appears from other cards by Gibson that he was producing them pre 1875 when they became mainstream.

That is interesting...you do get some anomalies when trying to date photos don't you..but dating old photos isn't an exact science so we can expect the unexpected...I learned something today  :D
I don't supposed everyone could afford to keep up with the current fashions either as clothes were often passed on or remodelled.

Very nice  8) Is there any particular reason why you have chosen the Gibson's Cartes to collect Jen ? My collection is huge and from all over the UK and I have 7 albums plus many loose ones...and also cabinet cards and postcards. I try to find named ones to trace living rellies and send them a copy.

I don't just collect Gibson's photos but any by photographers in and around the Hexham area. Its just coincidental that I've been able to acquire several by Gibson recently  8)
