Bunting, Evelyn Ivy-looking for birth record maybe wanganui adoption
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 09:54 GMT (UK) »
Evelyn Ivy Bunting-Born 1882   unsure where-died 1964 auckland, married John Charles Clayton 1901

Unable to find a source that verifies the place she was born. Wanganui is listed on some family trees and parents Edward John Bunting and Eliza Brown. There is some indication she was adopted but no records to support this. Checked inward passenger lists incase it was out of NZ but no luck there.
Is there anywhere to lookup adoptions in Wanganui?

thanks for any help.

Hello eevee

I have some information re: Evelyn Ivy and her "adoption"  which I will add to this thread, later today.   Still have a way to go with sifting through and checking records.

Hi eevee,

You may already have the wills of Edward John & Eliza Emma Bunting but if not.......

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-893C-MCDY?i=556&cc=1865481

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L93C-MHV4?i=344&cc=1865481

May not be relevant but Evelyn is only mentioned in the will of Eliza.

Remarriage?:

Hi eevee

As you've already suggested, Evelyn Ivy BUNTING was the "adopted" daughter of Eliza Emma (nee BROWN) and her husband Edward John BUNTING who married in 1877.

Firstly, as background a note on Eliza's family :
There are quite a few "trees" online covering Eliza Emma's BROWN family (John Tattersell BROWN and Catherine SEDCOLE) who married in Kent, ENG in 1845 where Eliza Emma was born in 1849 at Dover.    The family arrived in Wellington NZ sometime after early 1858 and prior to April 1861 when their son Alfred Sedcole BROWN was born.    Can't find an exact time or the ship on which they arrived, but John BROWN appears to have been sponsored by a "J. SEDCOLE and James Geo. COX" of (presumably) Wellington.

As there is no apparent birth registration for Evelyn Ivy BUNTING on the NZ BDM Birth index, it seems she perhaps had not been formally adopted ?

However a search of the NZ Birth index (@ ancestry) revealed an 1883 registration for >
"Eveline Ivy SEDCOLE".  There was no registration place given but you should check the NZ Birth microfiche records at a (larger) NZ library for that.
And, NZ BDM online has the following Birth registration >

1883 / 6730 - SEDCOLE - Eveline Ivy
Mother:   Sushannah *        Father :  N/R   (name not recorded)

[Date of birth (as deduced from the online listing) is = 12 March 1883 ]

[*  The mother's forename is spelled incorrectly - should read as "Susannah" ]

SEDCOLE + BROWN + BUNTING :

Obviously it seemed there might be a connection between Catherine (nee SEDCOLE) BROWN (Eliza BUNTING's mother) and the "J. SEDCOLE" who had sponsored the BROWN family's journery to NZ.

As it transpired, "J. SEDCOLE" was Captain John SEDCOLE a mariner, who appears to have arrived in NZ (more specifically at Wellington), sometime around 1853;   a brother to Eliza's mother, Catherine.

In 1857 John SEDCOLE married Elizabeth Ann NASH at St. Peters Church, Wellington.
Children of the couple were >

SEDCOLE
1858 - no given name
1859 - Clara Ann
1861 - Elizabeth
1863 - James Charles
1865 - Susannah *
1867 - Margaret West
1870 - Matthew Montgomery

[*  It seems most likely than not, that this Susannah SEDCOLE  b. 1865, was the mother of Eveline Ivy born 1883.    So Susannah SEDCOLE was the niece of Catherine BROWN (Eliza Emma's mother) ... and also the cousin of Eliza Emma. ]

A further note:     Captain John SEDCOLE died at his Wellington home on 18 November 1871.

Probate record for John SEDCOLE :
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99N4-QJXP?i=342&cc=1865481

His widow, Elizabeth Ann, remarried to James SHENNEN 1872 and moved her family to Foxton.
