George Arnold bef 1782 Rochford
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 16:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello All!

I'm having difficulties tracking down a baptism/parents for a George Arnold who based off his April 1803 marriage in Rochford to Anna Allen must have been born before 1782.  I have him on 1802 apprentice tax records as being of county Rochford.  I have him until his death being in the same place.  Just cannot seem to find anything prior to that 1802 record.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Did he died c 1839? If so and he was a builder, you will find his Will here, if  it is his Will it might give you some other clues http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/Result_Details.aspx?DocID=942966

or another (of the same name) Will for a carpenter and builder who died in 1825 http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/Result_Details.aspx?DocID=941365

The only baptisms I can find of a person of this name is on 21 Jun 1767 St Michael and All Angels Manningtree parents Joseph and Susan Arnold and 12 February 1775 Wanstead with parents Richard and Elizabeth Arnold

Thank you. He passed in 1825, his wife Anne proved his will with his friend.

I would think the 1775 baptism would be a more likely event, but it had seemed pretty far away from Rochford, so was hopping I was missing one.

Appreciate your assistance!

According to a tree on ancestry, he was 53 when he died 1825 so born circa 1772.
It also states that he died in Rochford but was buried in Eastwood Essex, perhaps Eastwood was his birth/home parish it would be worth a look.

I had a quick skim through the Eastwood burials and found those listed below but I'd suggest double checking them yourself. There are 2 Georges, which roughly tally with the Georges iluleah and amondg referred to.

I also had a quick skim through the Eastwood baptisms around 1775 (give or take several years) and couldn't see any Arnolds.

Also, the burial in 1847 of Ann Arnold appears to be that of the wife of George Arnold.

I’ve checked Rochford, hockley, hawkwell, southchurch, ashingdon, Eastwood and seen no Arnolds baptised. However, did see a John Arnold baptised to John and Mary Arnold 1772 in prittlewell. Went a few years either side and no George Arnold.

Thank you all for all that you searched and found! I did not have his wife Anne's death.  I really appreciate everyones help.

This baptism of George is just puzzling.  The closest is still the Wanstead in 1775.  Naming traditions don't seem very helpful either. He started life as a Yeoman before apprenticing at age 30 to be a carpenter, so I wonder if he moved to Rochford for the land/farming opportunity.

again thank you for everything!

I've had a look through the baptism records in Rochford and Eastwood between 1800 and 1840, just to see how many Arnolds there were, and there's just a handful in Rochford and none in Eastwood. Combined with the dearth of baptisms nannyj found in earlier years, in a wider range of parishes, it does seem to suggest George was from outside of the area.

Also, it looks like you can add victualler to the list of George's occupations.

Baptisms:

St Andrew, Rochford 1800 - 1812 (SEAX D/P 129/1/3):
12 May 1805 George Arnold; George & Anne
07 Aug 1808 John Arnold; George & Anne
01 Oct 1809 William Arnold; George & Anne
17 May 1812 Sarah Anne Arnold; George & Anne

St Andrew, Rochford 1813 - 1843 (SEAX D/P 129/1/7):
31 Mar 1816 Thomas Arnold; George & Ann; Rochford; carpenter; page 19, no 150
11 Aug 1816 Eliza Arnold; George & Ann; Rochford; carpenter; page 21, no 165
26 Apr 1818 Anna Arnold; George & Anna; Rochford; carpenter; page 34, no 272
25 Jun 1819 Amelia Arnold; George & Ann; Rochford; carpenter; page 40, no 317
02 Mar 1823 Samuel? Arnold; George & Ann; Rochford; victualler; page 65, no 519
08 May 1825 Samuel Alfred Arnold; George & Ann; Rochford; victualler; page 82, no 655
10 Feb 1828 John Spurgin? Arnold; John & Hannah; Rochford; butcher (late carpenter?); page 101, no 805
06 Jun 1830 Amelia Hannah Arnold; John & Hannah; Rochford; carpenter; page 117, no 930
05 Mar 1837 Ann Arnold; John & Hannah; Mile End Road, London; licensed victualler; about 8 months old; page 164, no 1306
