John Clapham, 21, Eastgate, Lincoln
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 17:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello There,

This was the address of my 4x Great Grandad, in Lincoln, in the 1841 and 1851 census. He was a Boot and Shoemaker, born 1793 in Hackthorn.
This is a link to a transcription of the 1841 census, giving his address number, from FreeCen2:
https://freecen2.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a14d9fff4040b9d6edf593e?search_id=5a2839994325a6028523643e

I cannot seem to find where the house was/ is.
I have looked on google maps, and found that there are two number 20's on the Langworth Gate side of Eastgate.
On the other side of the road (Greetwell Gate side) I cannot find it on there either.

Does anyone please have access to a map of Eastgate in Lincoln in the 1850's or around that time, which shows the house numbers?

I would be very grateful.

Thank you very much.  :) ;)

My apologies, you are correct (I just checked it with my family tree):

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbc/1851/4294847/00914&parentid=gbc/1851/0012726003&fulfillmenttypekey=1376

But I went to the Library yesterday, and his address in Slater's 1851 Directory of Lincoln, was put down as 21, East Gate.

And the British Newspaper Archive, gives details about John Clapham getting burgled:
"On Saturday night last, after the inmates had retired to rest, the house of Mr. Clapham, Shoemaker and Shopkeeper in Eastgate, was entered by means of the back window, and a quantity of sweetmeats, and about 5s in money were extracted.":
"Stamford Mercury - Friday 26 September 1851":

Thank you.  :)

I think that 20 and 21 Eastgate were amalgamated some years back.
I could go and have a look if you wish ?
