Elizabeth Morley (Nee Culley) 1871 & 1881 census please
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 19:01 GMT (UK) »
Elizabeth Culley b. Q4 1840 Prescot, married William Morley (I have no other details on Wm) on 8 November 1865 at St Anne's (RC) Church, Sutton, St Helens, Lancashire (from FHS spread sheet).

I’m unable to find her in either the 1871 or 1881 E/W census.  I find her again in the 1891 E/W census living at 13 Worsley Brow (Bulls Head Pub), Sutton, Prescot with her mother Anne Hope (nee Hill) who had remarried (1871)  but widowed again.  Elizabeth is shown as aged 50 and a widow.

I can find her in both the 1901 and 1911 census with nephews and she dies on 12 August 1933 according to probate.  Her nephew William Clare is mentioned.

She is buried in St Helen’s Cemetery (STHELCEM / 14 / 562)  with her mother and a number of siblings.  I can find no trace of William Morley’s burial nor a possible Prescot death on the GRO search, between their marriage and 1891.  This may mean that she wasn’t in the Prescot area during the missing years?

As Elizabeth isn’t a direct ancestor, I haven’t bought certificates but I am interested to know where she was during that time.  Happy to provide any further information that I may have which would be useful.

Any children with William Morley? **

**nope can't see any births  :-\ not any trace in 1871/1881.  Nor a sign of William.

Have you got her mother Anne Hope in 1881? (and the sister living with them in 1891)

Arriving on 15th August 1866 in New York are an Elizabeth Morley age 27, William Morley age 30, Thomas Morley age 50 and Jane Morley age 50.

The age is slightly wrong for Elizabeth, but worth noting if nothing else.

The 1870 US census is on FS and there is a possibility in Kansas

Milliepede, as far as I can see, there were no children.  Yes, I have her mum in 1881. Thanks for checking.

Chempat/CaroleW - great find!  I'll try and do some more research with what you have highlighted.  If you have any resources you can check out for me, I'd be very grateful.  I wonder if William died in the US.

Thanks for all your help. Kit

If that is them going to America, and the correct census in 1870, and then William died in Kansas between 1870 and 1891

1) Cannot see Elizabeth (or William and Elizabeth) in 1880 census

2) Very few state death records for Kansas before 1885 - need to look at more local records and try IGI etc

(They were recorded in St Mary's Pottawatomie in that 1870 census)

Thanks Chempat, US records and passenger lists are relatively new to me.  I'll have a play around on FS and Ancestry later today when I can put some time aside.
