Happy New Year....
So I have been working hard last autumn and put down my family tree for a few months, but with a new subs and motivation, I can’t avoid it any longer, and need to break some brick walls down, but first I am trying to verify that I have the correct family line on my Robertson side. I need help checking back and seeing if I am on the right lines if people fancy a challenge!
What do I know FOR SURE?
My Great Grandfather, Albert Robertson (Stafford, Staffs) b1889 - d1965, was married 25.11.18 in Stafford to Violet May Doughty (Stafford, Staffs) b1892 - d1959
Albert’s parents were Ernest Edwin Robertson (West Brom, Staffs) b1854 - d1936 who was Married 21.01.1886 Ladywood, Warwickshire to Jane Pointon (Stafford, Staffs) b1854-d1936
I have certificated for everything up until Ernest’s BMD but this is where it gets more complicated, because Charlotte Robertson b1821-d1859, from Halesowen had Ernest illegitimately. When she died Edwin, her brother, looks to have taken in Ernest and then appears on the marriage certificate of Ernest and Jane as his father.
From newspapers and Charlotte’s death certificates etc. I also believe Charlotte’s father was Issac Needham Robertson, born July 1795 in Harborne, Staffordshire, England and died 7th June 1856 Birmingham, Warwickshire.
I THINK that Issac was married to Mary Ann Morrell (1801 – 1838) and their children were; (in order of birth); Susannah Mascall, Charlotte, Mary Ann, Edwin, Robert, Benjamin Mascall, Frances and Sarah.
Issac’s death certificate states that he died at the workhouse in Birmingham, aged 61 on 7th June 1856. I don’t know if he married again after Mary’s death?
I then have Issac’s parents as Rev Robert Robertson (1763-1824) and Frances Bissell (1763 – 1827) both around the Harborne, Halesowen and Edgbaston areas. It’s from here I want to check I have the right families….I have their children (in order of birth) as; Robert, Rev William Arch Lee, Mary, Isaac Needham, Thomas, John, Anna Bradford.
It seems like a massive fall from grace for a Rev. son to have such a tarnished life, with crime etc. and then for Issacs daughter to have an illegitimate son! But it is the 1700/1800 so nothing surprises me. I just need to iron it all out – perhaps going sideways? There’s also some unique names in there and I feel like there are clues hidden!
Any help verifying or guidance is much appreciated here! My tree is also public on Ancestry 'Robertson Family Research'
