Previous residents
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 14:45 GMT (UK) »
The house I was born in was built in a little village in 1869 and I would like to find out about the previous occupants.  It's only a small village with quite a few ancestors.  Can anyone give me any ideas as to how I would go about it.  Thank you

Land Registry for the area, may still have plans and information on the development of the area and copies of deeds.

Should be in the 1871 census then, if you have more information you no how rootschatters love a challenge.

Thank you for your help.
I have been trawling through some censuses for the area but hit a brick wall as when I got to the centre of the village the only information said Cottage 1-2-3-4- etc.
The name of the village is Upottery, Devon and the cottages (4 of them) were built 1869 by the local landlord (Lord Sidmouth) for his estate workers.  The cottages were called Addington Cottages.

You might find that the residents either side of the new cottages have not changed from the 1861 census to the 1871.

Perhaps you can count houses along from a pub or the vicarage (or a named farm).
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

I have now managed to find out the names of the tenents of the above cottages from 1871 to 1911.  Thank you for your advice.  One of the cottages was a Post Office from 1871 to 1960.  I remember it well.
