Irish 5th grt grandmother? Father in Artillery?
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 19:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi
For awhile Ive been trying to find the origins of my 5th grt grandmother Elizabeth Robinson as in all census records she states she is from Ireland. She is living in Leicester and married to Thomas Simmons.
born abt 1816 Ireland going by census.
I recently come across someone who I believe is her sister who came to leicester with her:
Ellen Robinson married John Caulton/Colton and is listed as born abt 1814 Ireland on her census records.
Whilst searching I found an Ellen Robinson which fits her date given:
GRO Regimental Birth Indices (1761 to 1924) Transcription
Ellen Robinson
1814
Ballincollig
Ireland
Royal Artillery.
There is also one for an Elizabeth but in 1823 so doesn't fit with my census but is it possible to have been born 1816 and not baptised till then if a military child?
Elizabeth Robinson
1823
Athlone
Ireland
Royal Artillery.

This is all that seems to come up on these two unless they are sisters but from an un military irish background?
Any help would be appreciated.

From marriage in 1834 through all the censuses (except 1841 which I couldn't find) through to death in 1885 she was recorded as Eliza, not Elizabeth. Also I note that in 1851 she's shown as born in Leicester.

No - these are army birth registrations, not baptisms.

Hello
I haven't researched this line since posting this so going to give it another look.

If we just base it on her 1851 census entry, where she states she is born in Leicester and put a radius of 10 years either side of 1816 using the name Eliza, We get these -

Eliza Robinson
Born 4 Nov 1811
Bapt 13 Dec 1811
Parents - Thomas Robinson and Ann (Middleton)

Eliza Catherine Robinson
Bapt 10 Apr 1820
Parents John Briggs Robinson and Elizabeth.
(This Eliza appears to die 1837)

Using the name Elizabeth and location of Leicester, this one pops up -
Elizabeth Jane Robinson
Bapt 1 Dec 1817 St Margarets, Leicester
Parents Walter Robinson and Jane.
About the same age for Eliza.

Interestingly this Walter also has a daughter called thus -
Ellinor Robinson
Born Nov 1812
Bapt 28 Aug 1815 St Margarets, Leicester

I wonder if this is the ''Ellen Robinson'' who is similar age to Eliza and also states she is born Ireland.

On a marriage record of Walter's son Walter in 1843. Father Walter is given as 'Walter McCarthy Robinson' A predominately Irish name.
Could this be Eliza's father?
All the children of Walter marry in St Margarets and Eliza marries Thomas Simmons in St Margarets.
