Tragic death of Ada Assister in Pennsylvania 1920
« on: Monday 08 January 18 08:55 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to track down any sort of information such as an obituary for the sister of my 3x great grandmother. Ada Assister (nee Stevens) (1867-1920) was the wife of the Reverend Harry Assister (1864-1944). Both left the UK to settle firstly in Canada before relocated to Pennsylvania.

I came across a mention of the tragic circumstances of the death in an old family letter, and was then able to locate the death certificate. I was wondering if this tragic event might have been covered by the media of the day and if anybody might have access to be able to find this?

Many kind thanks for any help or information.

A small point which may help anyone searching - the surname seems to be Assiter (per the certificate and the Sep qtr 1889 marriage) rather than Assister as you have it in your post.

I don't know whether you will find anything in the papers of the day.  Sadly this was not an uncommon cause if death, and over the years I have seen several death certificates where the deceased (most often a young child wearing a nightdress) died in such an awful way.
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Many thanks for the reply. You are very correct it is Assiter, my lesson of the day is to make sure spellcheck doesn’t creep in!

I have limited access to US newspapers via Find my past. I have found mention of the Reverend Assiter but nothing of his wife or his later remarriage (which is mentioned in the family letters).

1930 census says Henry Assiter age at first marriage 25 years - Rachel age at first marriage 55 years - which might indicate they had been married about 1922 ish

Second wife - Adeline Assiter passed away 9 February 1947 - widowed. Father Alex Dyess. Mother Jane Mckallip PA.
Burial Evergreen Cemetery. Armstrong. PA
