Clerk family of Cransley
« on: Monday 08 January 18 10:32 GMT (UK) »
I am enquiring about a Hannah Clerk who married Thomas Wright in Cransley on 17 Dec 1792.
Their first child Elizabeth was baptised in Cransley on 1 Sep 1793. They moved away to Kingsthorpe, Northampton and their subsequent children were born or baptised there: Mary in 1795, John in 1798, Frances in 1801, Hannah in 1805 and Samuel in 1808. I am interested in Samuel as I am helping a present member of the Wright family who descends from him. I have information about him and his family. There is no connection with mine.
However, Hannah his mother seems to come from the Cransley family, with Leonard. and Elizabeth as her parents, but I cannot trace her birth or baptism. Does anyone know this Clerk family of Cransley?

It does seem likely that she is the daughter of Leonard & Elizabeth.

They seem to have had another child in Broughton - Elizabeth in 1769.
But no sign of a Hannah.

There are two Leonard/Elizabeth marriages
Leonard   CLARKE   otp   Elizabeth   WOOLSTON   otp   1761   25-Oct   Broughton
Leonard   CLARKE   otp   Elizabeth   LILLIMAN   otp   1768   21-Nov   Cransley

I wondered if Hannah was born before the marriage but there is no baptism of a Hannah Woolston or Lilliman

Have you got a burial date for Hannah? How old was she?

Thank you so much, Marilyn, for both your responses.
Yes, I have a death date for Hannah. She died and was buried in Kingsthorpe in 1827 aged 53 which places her birth in 1774.
I wonder whether she was born in another county beyond Northamptonshire.
I wonder whether we could find out more about her probable parents, Leonard and Elizabeth, who I note you think may well have married in Cransley in 1768. That date fits well with Hannah in 1774. The Broughton marriage date and Elizabeth the first daughter add to the fascinating and frustrating puzzle!
Kind regards
Alex

There is a space for a 1773 birth between the baptisms of the rest of the children.

Elizabeth 1769 Broughton
Mary 1771 Cransley
Rebeckah 1775 Cransley
John 1778 Cransley
Benjamin 1787 Cransley

Thank you, Marilyn, for the two marriages you gave. I note the name Lilliman in Cransley.
Richard Lilliman was a witness at the marriage of Hannah Clerk and Thomas Wright in 1792. That seems to be conclusive evidence of the Clerk or Clarke and Wright connection in Cransley.
