Welcome to RootsChat.
Do you have Martin's birth or Baptisim?
Do you know who Michael married.

There is a better chance of finding Michael through Martin's birth so if you don't have it can you give us an idea when was he born.
Civil Registration started in 1864.

Unfortunatly,no birth cert for Martin, but ,according to census1901,he was born 1856 ,then census 1911, born 1855 ,and acording to his death cert born 1846, We have found his grave ,and according to headstone , born 1854,So he may have been born ,in 1846 ,1854,1855,or 1856,So it is most likely ,it was sometime in mid 1850s. We also have a marraige cert for him ,He married Norah Shine in 1888,and on marraige cert ,It says his fathers name is Michael, but no other imformation ,on him .
We do know ,both Michael and Martin were born on inismore ,and according to older relatives ,townland of Kilronan.Nobody knows what Michaels wifes name was ,or if there were more children besides Martin,Thank you,

Unfortunately the west coast is where most emigration occurred but is also where the least amount of parish records survive.
Martin won't have a birth cert and baptisms for that period don't survive

It may still be possible to find a Michael Flaherty at some later point in his life but without Martin's mother's name there is no way to tell if it is the correct Michael.

The Army angle could prove useful.

Just looking at the name, Flaherty and Faherty are in the top 3 most common on Innisheer, Innismaan and Innismore so the chances of more than one Michael in or around Kilronan at the same time are very high, add to that it appears the Civil Registration only gives the name of the island as an address not where on the island. None that I've seen so far.

The certificate does state that Michael was a labourer - probably doesn't narrow it down but it's a start. Witnesses were Timothy Nagle & Mary Buckley. All 4 made their marks.

Oh correction just found some births with Kilronan as address, but unless Michael and his wife were still having children into the 1860s.....

I found 2 sets of army references to A Martin Flaherty [1] born ca 1851 in St Augustine parish, Galway who enlisted into the 56th regiment in 1869 - but was discharged 1890 & with father named as William married Teresa Howell in 1879 [so not him] & [2] a no-age no place of birth Martin in the 40th [W Norfolk] Regiment in 1871. No luck there then....
