WAGHORN PARKES, of Greenwich Kent
« on: Tuesday 09 January 18 13:34 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching my root's to the Waghorn family. The jist is this my great grandfather came to Canada in WW1 under the false name of William Walter PARKES (14 August 1886 of Greenwich Kent)

What I know from photo's and info:

He was alleged to have served in the army with PARKES who had an illness, the two were friends PARKES gave WAGHORN his name to move to Canada to start a new life. WAGHORN allegedly had a run in with the law which prompted PARKES to give his friend this new chance at life.

My grandmother who passed last year explained:
William married my great grandmother Louise Maud NELSON 31 July 1909. In the marriage certificate he refers to himself as PARKES. He has listed his dad was deceased William PARKES Sr. occupation bricklayer. All from Greenwich Kent.

I have a letter from when his marriage certificate was mailed he was listed as William PARKES (1886) in the 123 Battalion Royal Artillery. He was listed as a Driver with a service number of 41647 and was staying at the North Camp in Aldershot in 1909.

I have 2 photo’s of Ted WAGHORN who is listed as William’s brother. On the back of the photo it states “Ted worked for a railroad, dad’s brother”. Another photo of “Ted” is in uniform likely around WW1. I believe it is a Royal Engineers uniform and cap badge.

There is a photo of Jane Maria WAGHORN and written is “dad’s mother”.

William (1886) came to Canada ended up joining the military and served in the Siberian expedition where he contracted TB. He ended up passing away ironically on his birthday 14 Aug 1926.

I have exhaustively searched for years all parties by name variants, military records etc to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat.

I can see the 1909 marriage of William Parkes to Louise Maud Nelson took place in Hartley Wintney district (Hampshire).

When did they emigrate to Canada?

I can also see a William Parkes born in Greenwich joining the RFA in 1906 and serving until 25 September 1909. Next of kin is "older bro Edward address not known". Is this a reference to Ted Waghorn? If this is your man's military record he was using the name Parkes from an early age - he claimed to be 20 yrs 5mo old on 29 January 1906.

I've reached the same conclusions as rosie99 I think!

Edmund John Waghorn married Maria Jane Hollidge in 1884 Woolwich

Two children are:

Edmund Stephen Waghorn birth regd Mar qtr.1885 Greenwich
Walter George Waghorn birth regd Sept.1886 Greenwich

Edmund Stephen could well be the 'Ted' in the photos
Mother Maria Jane could well be Jane Maria
More significantly, Walter George Waghorn's birth regn. date would cover a birth date of 14/8/1886 and after 1901 census he vanishes off the face of the earth in this name.

What I can't understand is why, if he's the William Parkes b.Greenwich 1886 in army service record, is why he'd already becomes William Parkes when he enlisted 29/1/1906 which negates the family story that he'd swapped identity as Waghorn to Parkes whilst serving in the army.

If he was indeed Walter George Waghorn originally it would explain why he retained the name 'Walter' i.e. William Walter Parkes.

If, as William Walter Parkes, he did indeed die on his birthday of 14th August then I guess the only thing to do now if to acquire the birth certificate of Walter George Waghorn to see if it was indeed his birthdate (bearing in mind that WGW vanishes around the time your WWP first appears).

Have just looked at William Parkes death certificate - his parents are given as 'Edmond Stephen Parkes' and 'Maria Holedge'.

Bearing in mind change of name from Waghorn to Parkes (for whatever reason), I would say he was indeed the Walter George Waghorn b.Sept.qtr.1886 - Edmund Stephen was actually his brother, father was Edmund John (who was son of a Stephen) and mother Maria Jane Hollidge.

Plus, a George Walter Waghorn (not Walter George) born Greenwich enlisted in The Kent Royal Garrison Artillery (Militia) on 25/2/1903 - physical description shows 5' 5.1/2", brown eyes, brown hair, and the Canadian WW1 record show William Parkes as 5' 5", brown eyes, dark hair!!!
