Help with Charles Serjent born 1800 Wells, Somerset please
« on: Tuesday 09 January 18 16:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, I wondered if anyone has any advice on how I can find a birth or baptism for Charles Serjent born 1800 in Wells. I have all marriage info and census, death records etc he was a schoolteacher so can track him fairly well from 1837 onwards. He's alive for 3 censuses and states Wells as birthplace in 51 and 61 and in 41 he's not born in Gloucestershire. Living in Bristol in all 3.

I've searched online as I live in Leicestershire and have found sources that state they have the baptisms for Wells but I'm getting nowhere. Can anyone suggest any other options? He married Harriett Gilbert in 1828 in Clifton so I can't get a marriage cert for a fathers name.

Thanks in advance,

Kev.

There were no marriage certificates before July 1837. After Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753 the information recorded in the Parish register is the Parish, County, and year. the names of the bride and groom, the parishes they were from, the name of the Church, whether the marriage was by banns or licence, the consent of the parents if either of the couple were under the age of 21, the date of the marriage, the signature of the minister, the signatures of the couple and the signatures of the witnesses. Parents and Occupations are not shown.

That's brilliant, thanks, I suspected that he had a brother John Serjent and I know that John had a son John Giles. Found a marriage for Giles Serjent and Elizabeth Millard earlier and a John baptism.

Superb, thanks loads 😃

The baptism for John Sargent is Henstridge, is that near?

Sorry for the delay in replying, but I've looked at the Henstridge baptism and it appears to be the same couple, judging by their names. It looks to read:
1801....
Oct (?) 18 John son of Giles & Elizabeth Serjent
although the page is not easy to read in places. Sadly for you, a new clerk/parson started entering baptisms in 1802 (until 1812) which are the most complete I've ever seen - full names of parents with father's occupation and abode AND names of grandparents with grandfather's occupation and abode (in most cases).

To answer your query Henstridge is not particularly close to Wells - it is in the south of the county, on the Dorset border. I couldn't see any other Sergeants in the register around that period.

Where was the Marriage of Giles and Elizabeth that you found?
