Mr. Burberry of Congleton, Cheshire
« on: Tuesday 09 January 18 21:44 GMT (UK) »
Dear Friends,
I would highly appreciate any info on Mr. Burberry of Congleton, whose primary occupation was a tradesman, as well as he was famous champion-wrestler of Cheshire in the late 1860's early 1870's.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Ruslan

There is an article in the Liverpool Daily Post of 15 June 1863 regarding an Olympic Festival at Mount Vernon. It details the winners of events.

Wrestling (heavy and light weights) - First prize, a silver medal; second, a bronze medal. The prize for heavy weights was won by Mr JC Kennedy; the second by Mr George Burberry.

Finally found him but difficult due to the surname being constantly mistranscribed.

He died as George Burbery (seems to be the right spelling family used) in Dec.qtr.1910 Congleton, Cheshire - born 1841.

1901 census Congleton - boarder with a family named Goodwin - single - shown as what looks like 'Retired Civil Servant' - born Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire - transcribed on Ancestry as 'Busbury'
1891 - living in Congleton with brother William Peyton Burbery - writing on page is terrible and his occupation looks like 'Cotton ...... Manufacturer' - surname transcribed as Burbey.
1881 Congleton - boarder - occup. Towel Manufacturer - as 'Bunbury'
1861 - in Lancaster, Lancashire - shown as 'Articled to Civil Engineer' - as 'Barbery'.
1851 - in Nottingham at school.

George Burbery birth registered December 1841 Stratford on Avon - GRO shows his mothers maiden name as Peyton.

In 1851 his family are living in Ibstock, Leicestershire where his brother William was born, name transcribed as Bunbury:

John Jackson Burbery  48     Farmer of 370 acres       b. Kenilworth, Warwickshire
Margaret Burbery 44                                                b. Birmingham, Warwickshire
Elizabeth Horton Burbery  6                                      b. Alveston, Warwickshire
William Peyton Burbery 4                                         b. Ibstock, Leicestershire.

John Jackson Burbery and Margaret Peyton married in the March quarter 1839 Birmingham.

WOW Thanks sooooo much phenomenal stuff, great info, appreciate a lot !!! He was a famous Cheshire wrestler but looks like most of his competitive results were at Cumberland Wrestling Style, I didnt know it was practiced by Cheshire men. Thats something new to me...any ideas? I am not quite sure which style of wrestling was considered "folk" in Cheshire.
