Ancestry "maybe" hints
« on: Wednesday 10 January 18 13:24 GMT (UK) »
I have a private tree on Ancestry, very much still a work in progress, and because of the vast number of hints I'm being bombarded with I have been selecting "maybe" for any that are for real outliers (such as in-laws of distant cousins), the plan being to revisit them when I have worked my way through the blood relatives.  I know it's possible to search by dataset for all new/pending hints (as in not undecided, ignored or accepted), you just need the dataset number (DBID) and the tree number (TREENUM) and this URL works and sorts by surname:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/hints/tree/TREENUM/hints?hdbid=DBID&hf=record&hs=last

Does anyone know if there is a way of searching in a similar way for a subset of these, for instance all hints for 1851 census with hint status deferred, or deferred hints in general?  I've had a play around with the URL but so far I've not come up with anything that works.

Ancestry seem to use the word "maybe" when you are assessing the individual hint, "undecided" when you are viewing the headings above the list of hints for an individual, and "deferred" in the URL if you select the undecided hints for an individual.  I'm sure it's not their intention to confuse us!

This all sounds very complicated!

I ignore Ancestry hints. Unless I am following a particular person (say through the censuses, or looking for additional info about them) and then I may click on a hint to SEE if it is the same person.

I certainly wouldn't get bogged down with them otherwise - many are complete rubbish!

I agree !! I have the same problem with hints on FindMyPast....I review and Yes/No/Maybe as many as I can. ::) ::) I address one or two and end up with 20 - 30 NEW hints ??? ???

My ONLINE tree is in its infancy.  My "master" tree isn't online and represents 20 or so years of work. I don't think I'm a novice and am generally able to recognise some of the more "off the wall" hints for what they are. My purpose is to limit the proliferation of new hints for people who are peripheral at best, so that I can better spot the ones that do interest me.

That's not to say that in the future I won't want to revisit them, that's why I'm calling them maybe rather than dismissing them out of hand.

Surely when you go back and look again at the person in question at a future date, the hints will pop up again?  Therefore you don't need to record them?
