I would need to research, or learn from others, what work a ropemaker could find in Richmond, Victoria at that time.

Perhaps there were opportunities for rope makers in the Richmond area, but I always associate the skill with ports and shipping, and Richmond's location does not fit with that really.There was an establishment in Geelong.

Have you any other certificates pertaining to the family?

A marriage certificate of a child? Sometimes the word living or deceased can be seen on the parental particulars.

There is an article in  The Argus (Melbourne, Vic), Sat 11 Feb 1871, regarding candidates in an upcoming  election.  There is no mention of William BELL but there's a passing reference to an un-named manufacturing ropemaker in Richmond.  Sorry - no help at all really!

Thanks Matthew interesting article note that George Kinnear was the manager. Kinnears ropes eventually set up in Footscray from memory

I think we need to get the marriage cert for Walter Byron Wilson and Mary Ann Bell, direct maternal line ancestors of my wife. At least we know a bit about them from family folk lore.
