Walkers of Shrivenham/Watchfield/Faringdon
« on: Thursday 11 January 18 14:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I have been tracing the family of my great grandfather Henry John Walker. He died in WW1 but he was one of 12- possibly 13 siblings born to Henry Walker and Harriet Walker nee Iles.

Harriet was born around 1868 to Elijah and Ann Iles (nee Gibbs), but beyond that I know very little about her. She is on all the birth/baptism records of all her children, mostly as Walker, and then Iles for the youngest daughter (Eveline Mary Walker born 1911), and comes up on the 1901/1911 Census for the Watchfield area. Her husband Henry Walker died in the early 1920s but I cannot find Harriet after the 1911 Census.

Would anyone have come across Harriet Walker (nee Iles) or any Walkers/Iles from the Watchfield/Shrivenham/Faringdon areas in their research?

Many thanks,
Jen

As Elijah Iles is not a particularly common name is this his and Ann's marriage

21 February 1852 Highworth, Wiltshire Elijah Iles and Ann Gibbs both of Highworth. His father is Angel Iles and her father is Robert Day Gibbs. All, three men are Labourers. Witnesses Thomas Gibbs and Martha Reynolds.

A tree on Ancestry shows an actual date of death for her so one assumes they must have got the death certificate confirming this is her i.e. 15th January 1947 at Stanford in the Vale, Berkshire.   This would be the Harriette Walker death registered Mar.1947 Wantage, Berkshire bc.1866.

Although later census indicates she was bc.1866 she was in fact born in 1868 so gained 2 years along the way.

Henry Walker shown on the tree as died 21/6/1921 Watchfield.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to reply, it's much appreciated.

Youngtug, the Shrivenham heritage society is where actually where I started my initial search, it's a really good link!

Annette7: I had found Henry's burial on the Watchfield registers but there was no sign of Harriet's burial on there or the Shrivenham ones so thank you for that!

Emeltom: Yes, that is definitely them

Lizdb: I had no idea she'd worked as a servant, is that from a census record?

Rosie99: Thank you for that.

Jen
