Sylvester Perras parents - Canadian French?
« on: Thursday 11 January 18 23:02 GMT (UK) »
Sylvester Perras was born in 1858 in Michigan. He married a Margaret Freeman.
I'm looking for his parents..

While he was born in the U.S., according to a census, his parents are Canadian French.

Information on his parents would be appreciated!

Do you have a marriage or death record for him?  Those may mention his parents.

There is a 1934 border crossing from Canada to the US that appears to be and says he was illiterate and he was born "(phonetic) Antanogan, Mich."  Perhaps that was meant to be Ontonagon, Michigan?

I don't know if this is your guy, but there is a Sylvester Perras of St. Louis Co., Minnesota who bought public land that was being sold in Minnesota in 1905.  https://glorecords.blm.gov/details/patent/default.aspx?accession=MN3160__.446&docClass=STA&sid=smad5240.wvr#patentDetailsTabIndex=0

On a Social Security application for Sylva Edward Perras born 9 Dec 1888 in Calumet, Michigan to Sylvester Perras and Margaret England.  Maybe that's a son of your Sylvester?  As of his WWI draft registration card, Sylva was living in Vancouver, Washington, and his mother Mrs. Margaret Smith was in Cascade Locks, Oregon.  His WWII draft registration card says he was born Calumet, Michigan and living in Cascade Locks, Oregon.  This appears to be Sylva in the 1930 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XC96-LLH

In a 1920 Oregon newspaper, there was an Una Perras who was seeking a separation from Sylvester E. Perras.  It says she married him in June 1914, had no children with him, and they had lived apart since July 1918.  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lc6/

On the Oregon marriage index, there is an entry for Silvia Perras, married 11 Jun. 1914 in Crook Co., Oregon.  There is entry for an Una Boyles with the same date and location.

There is a border crossing to Canada at British Columbia on 15 Aug. 1919 for Sylva E. Perras, age 34, farmer, born Calumet, Michigan.  Last permanent residence was Cascade Locks, Oregon.  His destination was Calgary, Alberta.

Looking at the parents' names for Sylva Perras, I found a Margaret Schmitt in the 1920 census in Oregon.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4ZK-CKV

I found a marriage record for Joseph Schmid & Margaret Freeman, both residing in Cascade Locks, Oregon.  They married 31 Dec. 1915 in Vancouver, Washington.  Margaret was 53 & Joseph was 63.  It was his 2nd marriage and he was widowed.  It was her 3rd marriage, and she was divorced.  He was born Germany, and she was born Douglas Cnty., Michigan.  Her parents were Solomon England, born Canada, and Mary Ann Gibbons, born Ireland.

That would seem to account for her surname being Freeman and England.
