Antrim/Rathlin Catherine Wilkinson (McQuilkin)
« on: Friday 12 January 18 07:09 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather Thomas mother is Catherine McQuilkin and father is Alexander Cassley (some documents found under Capley).  They also had children John, James and Alexander.

Catherine died in 1938 at 75 years old and was sometimes called Kate.

Some documents show Catherine as being born in Boston, Massachusetts while others suggest she may for been born in Antrim. Family stories suggest a connection with Rathlin Island.

Thomas Baptism was sponsored by a Margaret McQuilkin, perhaps a sibling or mother of Catherine?

Catherine father is listed as being John Wilkinson on her marriage certificate. Ellen Devlin and Thomas Cassley served as witnesses.

I'm interested to find out if someone can help with McQuilkin history with more information on Catherine, where she was born and who her parents/grandparents are. If she was in fact born in Massachusetts it would be interesting if someone had more information on the McQuilkin migration to the west and why they migrated back.

Just a couple of items to help folk see where you're coming from: (1) the 1911 Ireland census showing her birthplace as Boston America; (2) her marriage of 1883 ...

I apologize for not putting enough information.

Alexander and Katherine were married in Ballycastle in 1883. They are Roman Catholic.  Alexander is listed as a Servant from Breen and Catherine is listed as a Housekeeper from Glenchesk. Both of their fathers were Farmers. Although she is listed as Wilkinson on the marriage certificate other documents we have old copies of have her listed as McQuilkin. One of these documents being her son Thomas baptism records from Armoy Catholic Church.  This is where the Margaret McQuilkin is found as well.

Both Alexander and Catherine are buried in Armoy.

In the 1901 Census I found the family here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Armoy/Breen/920893/

and in 1911 Census I found the family here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Armoy/Breen/112192/

Other information we are certain about because we are in contact with family found through letters we found in old files.

Sons of Alexander and Catherine:
- John Cassley born 1884 married Jeannie Devlin and a slew of children. Many of these decedents still live in/near Ballycastle
- Thomas born 1886 married Mary O'Donnel in Scotland and immigrated to the US (my great grandfather)
- Alexander Cassley was born 1890 and never married
- James Cassley was born in 1892 and is buried in Derry, it is believed his wife last name was Mullan. Family is interested in finding out what happened to his children as his wife left with them.

I will be in Ireland for 5 weeks soon and would be interested in pursuing any leads/recommendations people might have as I am stuck at the moment.
