1755 Baptism record
« on: Friday 12 January 18 14:12 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please decipher the place name for John Holland, father of the Ja[me]s baptised on 23 Nov 1755 at St Thomas' Heptonstall, West Yorkshire? For several other childrens' baptisms John was of Erringden.

Looks like it begins eith 'P' but can't think of any places nearby - others are Wadsworth, Hepworth; some of the family were fr om Midgley & Luddenden.

Thanks, Josey

He uses a colon in most or all of the place names.

Susan Shackelton's entry seems to be:    Hep:web:

Further down is:    wad:we??:

The Holland entry is:    Err:w??:

Mary Parker is another:    Hep:web:

Then Robert Hay is another:    Err:w??:

Can you relate these to the places around your parish?

ADDED:

The second part of the Hay entry place name may or may not be the same as the second part of the Holland entry place name.

ADDED 2:

There's a possibility all of the second parts are the same - maybe:   web:.

Thank you. I hadn't noticed the colons & had jumped in with 'worth' for 'web'. Could 'web' be short for webster? Many of the parishioners in the area were weavers.

I should think Hep is Heptonstall, Wad is Wadsworth, Err is Erringden.

ADDED: will look at whole double page again & see if there are other occupations.

ADDED again: Yes, in 1755 there are Hep:Tradesman, Wad:yeo & Hep:mason. Good spot, hd.

Is webster a dialectical variant of weaver?

If so, it's possible.

http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/w.html shows that a weaver was originally a female weaver & webster/webber was an operator of looms.
