WA: WESTCOTT, Henry, Born 1832, Bridgwater, Somerset
« on: Friday 12 January 18 20:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Henry WESTCOTT arrived in WA aboard the Minden on 14/10/1851 and was given "Expiree" status in December 1857, having actually completed his 7 years transportation 2 years earlier on 27/06/1855.   He was known in the Toodyay area during this time.

I have checked the online BDM Index and TROVE but failed to unearth any details.   Can anyone help please?

Thank you,

BAC3

Might be worth checking the Victorian BDMs as it appears that some of the WA convicts made there way to the Victorian goldfields after their release. I have one such associated with my tree.

According to this record Henry was 18 but not sure if that is age at sentencing in 1848 (b. 1830) or when he arrived in 1851 (b. c1833).

The Henry who died in Victoria in 1888 was reportedly 53 so born c1835. A MyHeritage tree indicates both the Westcott and Slee families were from Devon.

Do you know Henry's parents names?

A Henry WESTCOTT died in NSW in 1912 aged 79, so born c1833.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/28129728

NSW BDM shows his parents as Henry M & Betsy (reg 6647, Marrickville).

There are several children born to Henry & Harriet[t] WESTCOTT 1865-76 but I can't see a marriage in NSW. Harriet also died in 1912: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15362684

They are both buried at Waverley cemetery, who might have more info.

EDIT: It appears this Henry was an engineer at the Botany Waterworks, arriving on the Morpeth in 1865. Sorry - it was a red herring! But at least it rules him out...

Good Morning,

Thank you for providing the different options for Henry WESTCOTT.

I learned yesterday, however, that he may have been murdered in the Northam/Toodyay area of Western Australia in or about 1875.   This has not been validated but the pointers are fairly conclusive.   The case is being investigated for more information by a local Historical Society.

This is not your Henry - He came to Victoria in 1859 aboard the "Red Jacket", with his brother Joseph. They are my great great grandmother's brothers. Dale
