Southampton: Hooker
« on: Saturday 13 January 18 23:52 GMT (UK) »
Two secondary children appear in my genealogy coverage. I wonder who they are, particularly as to parents. Both are in Southampton. These are Ethel, born 1878 [City Birth Index] and, Sidney Ralph, born 1880, [City Birth Index]. Both live with their widowed mid-40s grandmother, Sarah Hooker [1881 Census, cites 6 King's Terrace]. She is my last English-born direct-blood relative, dying in Dec 1925.

Sidney Ralph Cleophas Hooker born June quarter 1880 Southampton - new GRO index shows the birth was illegitimate.

However, whilst I can see Sidney with grandmother Sarah in 1881 there is no Ethel at all!   The only Ethel is one born Dec.qtr.1879 Southampton - mmn Tribe.    She appears from census to be the daughter of Alfred and Ellen.

Yes, you've got the right about Sidney. Interesting: in the Royal Navy. The story is that he died when  a sailor on a stream ferry  the boiler blew up. Navy is a good correction.

There is an Ethel, born 1861, as a  daughter of Sarah [1871 Census] . By 1881 she has departed. So I wondered if the subject here, born 1878, is an illegitimate daughter of that Ethel.

No, I don't know what the GRO Index is. Sounds glorious. I just found those two names about 1985 in the Southampton City Birth Index when visiting England.
Many thanks for your enlightenment. It adds spice to those mundane work-to-live Victorians. If you find anything more, please send it along.

I was wondering about that too, I can't find her anywhere after the 1881 census when she is a barmaid in Southampton, (transcribed as HOAKER). Let me know if you need this transcribed.

He could also belong to Florence, the only way to be sure would be to get the birth cert. I think the birth found by Annette is the right one and he was either registered late or he lied about his age when he joined the Navy.

The GRO index can be found here,

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/menu.asp

You have to register but the index is free to view  :)  To see all the details you will have to order and buy the cert. They haven't got marriages online yet and I expect you have already found this, but just in case, there is also freebmd,

That find of Sidney, Daisy, is quite something. No, I don't have Ancestry now. The Mormon Church does, but know body there seems to know anything about how to use it for that obscure land called England!
The Hookers came from Hamble, down the coast, and multiplied into a cobweb of individuals centered in Southampton. I gave up my search of them in my 1986 visit there looking thru records in the city office. Here's a quote out of my years-ago written genealogy that, if you are curious, might answer a few questions. Who really belongs to whom?

During these years in nearby Southampton lived a number of unexamined people named Hooker. (See: Census of 1901, 1911 and Kelly, Southampton Directory)

I always tell myself to never give up, new resources are coming online all the time and RootsChat members are always willing to help  :)

Regarding the Morman Church I think you are talking about familysearch, I expect you have already seen it but just in case,

https://www.familysearch.org/

https://www.familysearch.org/search

Lots of ways to search and find things on the search page but I'm the first to admit that I haven't worked out how to find everything under Search Catalog but I'm getting there :)

They also have this page,

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Main_Page

which I'm only just starting to explore :)
