I’m the sacristan of a church in the Reading area, and have come across a family bible that has an inscription, that I have managed to trace to a marriage in the Siston, Gloucestershire parish.
The inscription reads:
“George Jones
Son of George Jones was born June 30th 1792 On Saturday high at 1/2 past 9 O’clock
Six hundred”
On the following page, there is the same inscription repeated, and a line above it that says
“George Jones was married Nov 4th 1813”
On the back inside cover the original inscription is also repeated. Through a bit of hasty research, I looked up a record that is of the correct name and date for George Jones marrying a Martha Jefferie, but I know no more about that union.
Firstly, I’m hugely nosey, and would love to know how it ended up in Reading, and secondly if it is relevant to anyone’s family reasearch I would love for them to have it.
In my opinion, it should not be for sale (!) on a church book stall.
