William McEwan & Mary Ann Dencer and family
« on: Sunday 14 January 18 11:29 GMT (UK) »
I’m struggling to find the marriage of William McEwan and Mary Ann Dencer (many variants possible!)

In 1861 they are in Shoreditch RG9/248/15/26

W McEuon   28    born Scotland French polisher
Mary Ann   22     Bermondsey
Wm      3       Cripplegate
Charles   2      St Lukes
Mary Ann    1      Kingsland

William senior died in Shoreditch Q4 1867, but not before six surviving children were all baptised on 9 January 1867 at St Michaels & All Saints (indexed by An*y as Southfields, Wandsworth !)

In 1871 the mother and children are still in Shoreditch RG10/443/51/29.
It appears Mary Ann has remarried a Thomas Ward.

I suspect she didn’t, because she did marry as McEwan (father Charles Dencer) on 28 Sep 1876 to Thomas Pallett at St James, Bethnal Green.

I then lose everyone, apart from the eldest son William Edward (born 7 July 1857).

Any help with finding the first marriage, and what happened to Mary Ann Pallett/McEwan/Dencer and the other children would be appreciated.

I wonder whether Thomas Pallett might be the same person as Thomas Ward?

I say this because I couldn't find a birth reg for the son Thomas Ward (2 in 1871) but there is this:

Thomas Pallett mmn McEwan, Sep qtr 1869 Shoreditch.

Similar occupations too - Thomas Ward is a shoe clicker in 1871; Thomas Pallett a shoemaker in 1876.

Good find avm228

and I've just found :
Thomas Ward Pallet died Q2 1873 Shoreditch aged 3

What is going on with this Ward-Pallett thing?

When William Edward McEwan married Mary Tanner on 24 August 1878 the witnesses were Thomas Pallett (!) and Mary Ann McEwan (I assumed his sister, but could be mother).

And William Edward's trade was --- clicker

Thomas Ward/Pallett b abt 1825 Ansley, Warwickshire is certainly elusive.

I see however that there is in 1871 (Birmingham) a Charles Pallett b abt 1823 Ansley, Warwickshire - possibly related? RG10/3111/54/30.

Also in 1871 (Burslem) an Edward Pallett b abt 1826 Ansley, Warwickshire RG10/2850/5/2 - though he seems to call himself Edward Pallett Douce in other records inc marriage 1855.

18 November 1816, rather than 1819

Thomas Pallett's father at his 1876 marriage was William Pallett, deceased.

Might explain the Ward-Pallett naming connection

This is heavy going !

But I've found Charles "Mc Cuon" in 1881 at 172 St Johns Road, Clerkenwell RG347/20/10

aged 21 [out by 2 years]
bootmaker [following step-father, Thomas Pallet]
born St Lukes, London [matches 1861]

it's a lodging house managed by his uncle Thomas Dencer !!!
