Samuel & Phoebe Hawker had 15 children but I only found 7!

 On the 1911 Census I have only just noticed that Samuel and Phoebe Hawker had 15 children but only 7 were alive at that time. I have only found 7 confirmed children on my family tree. How do I discover the "lost" ones? FreeBMD has lots of possibles. There used to be a way on family search to find children with just father's name.

Can anyone help please.

The new GRO Birth index now shows mother's maiden name;  I've found quite a few "lost" ones.

Sorry, nannyjan, but this was before 1911 which is when, I believe, mother's maiden name became available in the search.

This is a new addition for all births registered.

It is the additions to the indexes that make for exciting news here. In the birth indexes the mother’s maiden name has been added to all records, originally this information was not added until 1911. In the birth indexes the age of death is now included in all records, something not added until December 1865. Also in both indexes all forenames have been extracted. There are no initials used here as in the published national indexes.

As NJ said a search using mother's maiden name has been available on the GRO site for quite a few months. This gives maiden names from 1837 up to about 1915.

Yes you have to register, but it is free. The only problem is that the searches are quite limited as they only allow 2 years either side of a date and you have to state male or female. I usually use Freebmd first to try and narrow it down and then use the GRO site to check maiden names. Deaths on there also now show age at death which is useful.
