James McGuinness married at 79 and was fathering children in his 80's???   ??? Or have I misunderstood? How old was his wife?

I've been waiting for the answer to that...
Looks like 1874 is more likely

The  poster believes  he was born 1831 so he would have been 79 when he married on March 27th 1910 and therefor he was fathering children in his 80's....
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Catherine's age on 1911 tallies (almost) with her age in 1901 which was 19. I think she may have noticed that her husband looked 40 years older than he claimed to be. Unless he'd found the Spring of Youth.   ;D
Catherine's parents, Anthony & Bridget married 2nd Feb. 1880, Ballina district. Residence of both was Crossmolina. Anthony's father was Pat and Bridget's was John. Both were deceased.

This may be James on 1901 Census:
Crossmolina north. Ballinabaun house 12
Catherine Mcguinness (65) head, farmer, widow
James                        (27)  son, farmer's son,  unmarried.
+ other family.
This ties in with 1911 census when he's married to Catherine.

Birth of James McGuinness 1873:
Crossmolina District. Ballina Superintendent's District.
Parents Thomas & Catherine (formerly Brogan). Residence Bally-----. Thomas was a landholder.
This seems to be the man who married Catherine Leonard in 1910. If he's the correct one he was in his mid 30s at time of his marriage, not a septuagenarian marrying a woman 50 years his junior.  ;D

The 5 mile saying was before young men & women had bicycles. Also before railways.  :)

If James McGuinness was related to Catherine's mother, Bridget Leonard, formerly McGuinness the priest who married them may have recorded it in the margin of the parish register. Degrees of consanguinity (blood relationship) used to be noted for marriages of cousins. Not all priests wrote it in.
Birth of Bridget McGuinness was, according to her age of 24 at marriage, around 1855/6,  before start of civil registration.
