Information from will
« on: Sunday 14 January 18 15:27 GMT (UK) »
I'm rather out of date on this subject so hoping for some advice, I've obtained copies of wills in the past but can't remember how I did it.

The item I'm interested in dates back to 1727 in Broadclyst, Devon, it's for James Bell. The entry on FindMyPast shows a transcript with a document type of Administration. I suspect that this means there wouldn't be much further information. The record on Ancestry doesn't give any more information.

Can anyone please advise me as to whether I can obtain any more meaningful information?
Bell, Salter, Street - Devon, Middlesbrough.
Lickess- North Yorkshire, Middlesbrough.
Etherington - North Yorks and Durham.
Barker- North Yorks
Crooks- Durham
Forster- North Yorks/Durham
Newsam, Pattison, Proud - North Yorks.
Timothy, Griffiths, Jones - South Wales

Most Devon wills were destroyed when the Exeter Probate Registry was bombed in 1942. Unless a will was proved in the PCC, or there was an abstract of some kind, the records can normally be identified only from the calendars or indexes compiled before WW2.

For the administration of James Bell's estate in 1727, the source given by FindMyPast is FRYA. See here ...

Fry’s Calendar, showing the entry, is online here (p. 261, left-hand col., 3 lines up) ...

Unfortunately, it looks like there’s no further information.

Thank you for that Bookbox, much as I anticipated but interesting to see the source document. That bomb has been the bane of my Devon research!

Thank you.  :)
