tracing someone's adress in 1941 Somerset
« on: Sunday 14 January 18 21:36 GMT (UK) »
Trying to confirm a connection. My mum was born in Taunton in 1941, but her family were in London in 1939. The name of the person she now believes was actually her father corresponds to someone living in Bath in 1939. (1939 register). Although both Bath and Taunton are in Somerset, there's a bit of distance between them. Assuming her mum and this man must have been in the same place at some point, I'd like to find addresses closer than Bath-Taunton. Does any one know of a way to trace addresses in 1940/1941 ? Electoral registers were stopped I believe, so anything else ?

As you correctly surmise electoral registers in Somerset were stopped between 1940 and 1944.  The likelihood of finding what you are looking for is very small indeed.

I take it there are no family letters that would assist in your quest?

Have you found your grandmother in the 1939?  If so where was she living?

Was the father in the services at all during the war?  Did he marry?  If so where and when?  Or was he already married at the time he knew your grandmother?

You could get the 1945 electoral register checked just to see if the father was still living in the same place then.

thanks, a couple of pointers, My mum's parents & 2 sisters / 1 brother are living in London on 1939 register - which is consistent. Will look at 1945 electoral registers.

As a starter I suggest that you write to the South West Heritage Trust, explain what you are looking for and where can you find it.

General enquiries about the South West Heritage Trust
Email: info@swheritage.org.uk

Phone:  01823 278805

If they don't have the relevant records no doubt they will tell you where to look.

Hi There

I think your best bet would be to get someone who is going to the heritage centre to check the Taunton street directories for you as that should confirm the address & will give you another source as well as the electoral rolls

All the very best
