John VINYCOMB - went to Scotland?
« on: Monday 15 January 18 03:53 GMT (UK) »
Going through and cleaning up my tree. I have a John VINYCOMB who is rather out of place.

He married Agnes BLACKADDER in Chirnside, Berwickshire in 1784 and the minister wrote that he is "servant to the Revd Dr Anderson Minister in Chirnside." On later records he's a feuer, tacksman, or labourer.

He died in Chirnside in 1821, age 75 per his tombstone and is buried there. His son David, my ancestor, ended up in Durham/Newcastle and married an Englishwoman.

Obviously, VINYCOMB is a very Devonshire name and not Scottish. I am wondering how John came to Scotland and how I should go about tracing him. There's no other VINYCOMB in the Chirnside area (as far as I could see), so I think he came alone. I found several John Vinycomb baptisms in Devon in the 1740s so I'm not sure where to start or if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Any help appreciated.

Have you contacted the parish of Chimside, perhaps they can tell you the dates the Rev Anderson  was the minister there.
If we can get a first name of Rev Dr. Anderson we could trace the ministers movements, perhaps he was a minister in Devon at one point.

Looks to me that he was Walter;

Walter Anderson (1723 – 1800), was a historian.
Anderson was for fifty years minister of Chirnside, Berwickshire

A bit of googling will find a Wiki page and a A biographical dictionary of eminent Scotsmen entry for him.

Well if John Vinycomb married 1784 and Rev. Dr. Anderson was the minister for 50 years, 1750-1800
I've never had a person sent so far away to go into service.
The local vicar in Devon of course could have put in a good word for him if his family needed to find him a position.
Perhaps someone who lives in Devon could point us in the right direction as to what records are available other than parish bmd.

There's no other VINYCOMB in the Chirnside area (as far as I could see), so I think he came alone.

The attached shows that a George Vinneycombe married in Chirnside in 1791. Perhaps a brother? John certainly named a son George.

Margaret VINYGAME was buried in Coldstream in 1816, but I can't see any children or George's death.

Hi there,

George Vinycomb is John b. 1746's son. He joined the army and seems to have ended up in Canada.

George Vinycomb is John b. 1746's son. He joined the army and seems to have ended up in Canada.

Is that from a first marriage then? That seems odd as John had a son called George in 1791 following his marriage to Agnes in 1784.
