No entry for a father on the cert means he was illegitimate.

There is one Tree on Ancestry that has John as the son of a Samuel and Jane Brown of Kerry Montgomeryshire.

According to the 1871 census, he was born in Kerry c1838.

There is a John Brown who was baptised in Ceri on 17th February 1839, the son of Samuel, a farmer, and Jane, nee Venables, of Hill Tenement.

John and his parents are there in 1841 and at Hill Cottage, Gwenthrew, Newtown, in 1851. Samuel and Jane are at Hill Cottage in 1871, but no John (now married?).

This ties in with the tree but it is odd that there is no father's name on the certificate.

John and Jane married in Ceri on 10th July 1826.

Many Thanks for all your replies.Everything points to his father been Samuel Brown but it's just strange that he is not listed on the certificate, which suggests he may be illegitimate ?

John Brown is a very common name.

I would check to see if there is a birth registration (hopefully it isn't too early) for
John Brown mothers maiden name Venables.

If there is one then he is a different John Brown.  Presume you have found the birth registration for yours without a mothers maiden name?

Found these 3 births all registered in Newtown

Sep 1837 mothers name Owen

Dec 1837 no mothers name

Mar 1839 mothers name Venables

I would look for them in 1841/1851 to see if they are with a father and mother etc  :)

Many Thanks

John Brown's age on marriage was 25 so ties up with the Mar 1839 birth with the mother's surname of Venables.
So it confirms the parents are Samuel Brown and Jane Venables who married in 1826 just a mystery why Samuel Brown was not listed on the certificate.
