So you have come across the same dead ends as me, I'm wondering if there's a sister I haven't found yet???
 I kept hitting a brick wall,.

Yes need to find a death registration first and work from there.  The surname could be spelled incorrectly but any other scrap of information however small might be the key to unlock the mystery.

I wonder if she was from another generation of the family or an in law if you see what I mean. 

It must have been reported at the time if police were involved.  Poor lady 

There's an Alice Betton died 1944 age 54 but am assuming we are looking for a younger lady - or is it wrong to assume that

The thing is during the war, Frederick (1924), was quite close to the police,  I'm wondering now if it hadn't been covered up somehow, the village of Tupton was quite close knit, although we know the reason why, maybe it wasn't common knowledge, still doesn't explain why I can't find a name nor the death

Thought of something else - what about looking for a burial/gravestone?  If it was a small village the family would likely be buried in the same churchyard or cemetery if there was one.

A headstone for her parents for example may mention her even if we can't find one for her individually.  Something to investigate perhaps
