Betton of New Tupton
« on: Monday 15 January 18 15:55 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help
I'm filling in the gaps ... at the moment I'm working on a little mistery . my husband's side
A long story short

One of my husband's aunties is  pulled out of "Smithy Pond" wingerworth. Having drowned herself.
The poor girl has fallen in love with an American airmen, and found out he's married.
Her name was never mentioned again.

Who was this poor unfortunate lady?

I know she was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Betton, she was born before 1924 in Tupton.
I have been given a few names of what her name could be but nothing concrete...
It could be Mary Ann, or flora, or Jessie????
Can't find anything on ancestry to help

Is it Chesterfield registration district?

Looking for female births Betton/Lowe there is a Mary A in Jun 1915 might that be her.

Have you looked for a newspaper report of the incident?  Now we know her name might be Mary A to search for and get a year it happened  :)

I know it's not a made up story, my husband's dad was requested by the police, to go in the pond and get her out. And then to identify her.
The family lived in new Tupton Derbyshire, and she was found in "smithy pond" wingerworth.

My husband's got it in his head it's a cover up! Lol, I can't find anything. Apparently the date I gave was when the American forces were "over here"

Is it possible she was a married lady so any report or death registration would be under another surname ie not Betton?

Looking at a family tree it has Mary Ann marrying and passing away in 2004 so not her.

However it does have Emma passing away in 1930-1933 so could she be a contender or is that too early?  She wouldn't have been very old then if born 1908.

Having said that I don't see a death registration for her in those years  :-\
