Control Commission Germany 1945
« on: Monday 15 January 18 17:03 GMT (UK) »
 Hi,

My Grandfather, Jens Frederick Thorn was part of the British Control Commission in Berlin in 1945. A London Policeman in his Fifties, the story is that he was requested to help the transition to peace.

I would like to know if there are any online resources that focus on this post war initiative, and if there any records that would give details of exactly where and when my Grandfather served.

I'm assuming there may also be some resources housed at Kew, but again, I'm not sure where to look.

Any advice would be welcome!

Colin

When searching, note the full title was the Allied Control Commission and Google will give a number of hits.

There are indeed a large number of documents at the National Archives.  Here http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/h/C8311 for example are those that come up under the main Foreign Office heading.  FO 1012 deals with administration and may be the most likely for finding specific records of an individual. FO 1065 has personnel administration in its title.  Contact with th Foreign Office archive team may also  get somewhere https://www.gov.uk/guidance/archive-records  See here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/foreign-offices-archive-inventory for an inventpry of its file holdings.
Here http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/foreign-commonwealth-correspondence-and-records-from-1782/ is the NA guide.

British Library document here https://www.bl.uk/voices-of-science/britishlibrary/~/media/subjects%20images/government%20publications/pdfs/germany-allied-control-zone-government-publications.pdf

Book here http://howitreallywas.typepad.com/how_it_really_was/british_occupation_of_germany_after_the_second_world_war/

Not an area that I know anything about but I'd venture to suggest that the chance of finding something on line that names your grandfather and relates him to his work are pretty remote.  Good luck

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

That’s absolutely brilliant Max.

A wet weekend’s work for me there!

Much appreciated, and I’ll report back if I find anything exciting.

Uncanny!  I've just started a search for a particular individual who worked for the Control Commission in Dusseldorf at some stage between 1946 and, possibly, 1950. This individual married a Frenchman who was working for the French equivalent organisation in Dusseldorf in 1949.

Let me know how you get on, Max.

Meanwhile - I'll follow some of the leads suggested by the Moderator.
