John Seaward Harboust business in Chard
« on: Tuesday 16 January 18 09:40 GMT (UK) »
For a period between the years 1870-1885 my relation worked in Chard, Somerset as a apprentice to John Seaward Harboust. The newspaper article states Mr Harboust was respected in the district but I can not find him or his business. Any information would be greatly received.

Unfortunately I have no idea what his employment was. Previously he was a railway plate layer and later a coker and therefore I assume it would be manual work. Perhaps at sometime I will need to search old Kelly's Directories but with an unusual name and the fact he was offering apprentiships in a smallish town, I am hopeful that someone can help.

Thank you for trying to help.

Mark

Are you sure the name is Harboust?  I can find no one of that name in the Newspaper Archive, the censuses, or the Historical Directories.

Once again you have turned up trumps. Very many thanks. The one member of the family I fear though that might prove difficult is his brother Charles Higgins b Crewkerne 1863, who worked for sols in Chard and disappeared around 1885. Family rumour that he drowned. Message previously left.

But again very many thanks for finding the info that had the wrong spelling in the newspaper.
