Thank you Jool and Heywood.

I have now been informed that the family story of Morris abandoning his wife is incorrect; when he married Sarah the family apparently distanced him as she was not Jewish.  Although they lived in financial comfort due to family money during their married life the money was apparently cut off when Morris died leaving the family in great distress and Sarah went from having servants to taking in laundry.  I am so glad that Morris has had his name cleared!

This is so fascinating and I will have to delve into Parish records etc, when next in the UK

Again thank you both so much for your wonderful assistance.

That sounds more plausible.

Morris Rosenthal married Sarah Ellen Bleasdale in 1889 in West Derby, Lancashire.

In 1891 Sarah Ellen and baby Clara May are with the Bleasdales in Hulme, Manchester.
I think Morris is transcribed as Carris and is at the family home with his mother and siblings. He is described as ‘single’. He is a Jeweller’s traveller.
Of course, the census only tells you about whereabouts on one night.

1901 shows the family in Bury. Morris is described as an Auctioneer Clerk. The children were born in Liverpool but Victor was born in Southport.
Besides Clara May , Henry Sydney, and Victor there are two daughters, Lillie and Edith.
They didn’t have servants.

In 1911 Lilly seems to be a servant in the same area that the rest of the family are living, Bradford, Manchester.

In addition to the marriages I have given you already,

Clara May married William Francis Hinde in 1915 at Christ Church Bradford.
Edith married Thomas William Clarke in 1914 at the same church.

Lillie married John Richard Byatt in 1913 at St Stephen, Chorlton on Medlock.

All describe their father as deceased and as a Jeweller.

Lastly, I think  :)

Baptism 1910  Victor Rosenthal, St Aidan, Bradford
1911 Henry Sydney same church.
Morris is described as Wholesale Jeweller and obviously both are adults.

Good luck with your research

Heywood  :)
