King's Royal Rifle Corps
« on: Tuesday 16 January 18 18:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I have the 1907 attestation papers for Ge0rge Hammert0n born Didsbury 1889.

He enlists and appears to be appointed to the East Lancashire Regt number 3793.

1911 census finds him as a 22 year old Rifleman with the 4th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps in India.

The Battalion appears to join WW1 in 1914.

I'm trying to find a war diary or possible explanation for his award of the Silver War Badge, he is discharged as Corporal 11 October 1918 from the KRRC Depot number 8418 rather than a Battalion, the cause given as Wounds KR P392 (xvi), not sickness.

His 1916 marriage cert has him listed as 6th KRRC (Carter).

Any pointers would be appreciated.

The Silver War Badge was awarded to service personnel who had been honourably discharged due to wounds or sickness caused by their  military service. Have you looked at the local papers, just maybe he was mentioned.
Have you looked on The National Archives site for a possible war diary? Sorry I can't remember how to do a short link

The battalion he last served with overseas was 16th Battalion (from his medal roll entry).  The war diary for that battalion is http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353850  (also on Ancestry).

Problem is as he was discharged in UK he must have been casevaced out of France/Belgium, perhaps via a hospital stay in France and we don't know when he was wounded.  If you are very lucky he may be named somewhere in the diary.  I'd start from Oct 18 and work backwards.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Thanks both.

I'll make a note about the newspapers but there is some mystery about his whereabouts.

I've found the war diary in a roundabout way on Ancestry but it wasn't (obviously) listed in the drop down box.

Will settle down with a cuppa and work backwards.
