Musto surname Gloucestershire
« on: Tuesday 16 January 18 20:09 GMT (UK) »
Wondering if anyone has information on the Musto surname from Gloucestershire. There are several stories in my family, one being that when ancestors travelled to US, they added an e at the end of the name. My great, great grandparents are Joseph Musto and Sarah Wood.

Thanks! I’ll look into that. I was told the family ended up in Colorado around 1885 or so, but can’t find the immigration records.

Temple Genting is likely Temple Guiting? (pronounced Giting).

Joseph Mustoe (with the 'e') appears as such from 1861 census onwards until his emigration, plus he married Sarah Wood in this spelling.   So he certainly didn't just add an 'e' to Musto once he got to the US.

He was the son of a another Joseph and wife Ann Pugh but took me a while to find Joseph's birth entry (June quarter of 1855 Tewkesbury) as well as that of his siblings.   They were all registered as Mustow!  The family were born in Kemerton, Gloucestershire where they were living on the census.   Joseph was baptised 6 April 1855 Kemerton as Musto.

Joseph Musto married Ann Pugh 20th August 1832 Kemerton.

Thanks! I was told that 6 musto brothers came from England and added the E when they got to the US so that it would sound less Italian. I’ve been trying to research that, but looks like it’s probably a false story.

Thank you for the Mustow lead. This may be where I’m getting stuck.

1900 census states Joseph arrived 1883 but Sarah in 1884.

I found Sarah and 3 children arriving 15/9/1884 on the 'Catalonia' on the Castle Garden site - I then checked on Ancestry but whilst there are arrivals on this ship in 1883 and 1884 there is nothing for 15 Sept.1884??

Sarah Mustoe 31, A.E. Mustoe 10 (this is daughter Ann (Annie) Elizabeth b.1875), Joseph Mustoe 3 (Joseph Thomas Mustoe b.1881) and Bertha Mustoe 8mos (described as such but must be son Bertie whose birth was reg'd in Mar.qtr.1883 and age should more likely read 18 mos).

Unfortunately, on the Castle Garden site you cannot see the original passenger lists and, as already stated, this listing is not coming up on Ancestry.

(There had been another daughter Alice Gertrude Mustoe birth June quarter 1878 but she died (death June quarter 1879).

So, Joseph had gone to the US the year before Sarah and the children but can't find an entry for him on either Castle Garden or Ancestry.
