Help With A Past Bigamous Marriage
« on: Tuesday 16 January 18 23:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone I’m a newbie here, thank u for accepting me. I’m trying to trace my grandfathers (dads dad - deceased) bigamous marriage and kids born in that time. I have found the record of the marriage and have unable so far to identify any children born. There were 2 sons born from that marriage. What I would like to ask is would the children’s surnames stay the same (my grandads assumed name)? I have the name of the lady he married 5 years after he married my nan. I’m hitting a blank and really could do with some advice on this. My grandad was found out and did serve time inside for bigamy back in the 50’s or 60’s. If anyone can help that would be most appreciated

Rachel

Hi Rachel

Welcome to Rootschat.

The children could have either the father's or mother's surname.

Would you like to give us some names and then we can have a look for you?  Some idea of years and place would also help.

I do have names and dates etc, I’m unsure if they are still alive as I haven’t been able to trace them. How would I let you know their names to be able to search please?

Welcome to rootschat RMorgan.

You can send other members a personal message by clicking on their name. This way you can exchange information privately.

If you would like to have a look for yourself, using combinations of the surnames and entering likely dates, you can try freebmd:

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

.... and the GRO website (though I am not sure if there are cut off dates for more recent events) and you have to register to use the site:

If your grandfather and the 2 ladies in question are all dead, you can tell us those names, and places of marriage etc so we can all help in the search.

What country did this happen in?

Rachel did say this in her first post:-

I’m trying to trace my grandfathers (dads dad - deceased) bigamous marriage and kids born in that time.

So we should be able to look for him.

What about doing autosomal dna test with ancestry in case there are any of them in the database , although it will involve a bit of work to work out matches.
