Well, it looks like the 1852 census enumerator had a very hard time with 'Harper' and the twins' mother was now remarried to a Mathew Smith and had 2 more children. The x's beside Mathew and Elizabeth's ages would signify a married couple. They are in Portneuf County.

Wow, great find! This puts the family in Portneuf where Mary stayed and was eventually married. Thanks so much for your efforts. I suppose it wasn't the William and Eliza Harper in Kingston, just a coincidence!

They were right under my nose the whole time!

The mother Elizabeth Murphy is listed as a close neighbor to James Gray and Mary Harper in the 1861 census. There's also another Murphy living just next door, maybe a sister. I don't know how I've missed seeing this for so long, tunnel vision I suppose.

Added... Mathew and Elizabeth are traceable through at least the 1891 census, if I remember correctly.

The connection between Elizabeth and Portneuf now opened a lot of doors, linking her to a Murphy clan comprised of one of the early families in the area. I'm still keeping my eyes peeled for a death for her husband William.

A little ashamed I missed something so blatant ... thankfully I had this forum to set it straight.

I haven't been able to find a death for William in the Portneuf area. Perhaps he died in New York (where the girls were apparently born) and Elizabeth went to Quebec after his death if she had connections there.
