Thats pretty interesting.
I went for that Margaret MacDonald because someone had mentioned that his mother was a School teacher. It so happened that Margarets Dad was a School Teacher.
I thought that was very unusual about the name also.
If it wasnt a legal adoption, would it have been someone they knew.
I dont think his adoptive parents were his paternal though unless Mmmm!!

The other thing is.  James O'brien McDonald was born what looks like 26 west Cumberland street and Margaret MacDonald was born  56 West Cumberland Street.   could easily be a mistake of number.

It is actually the Glasgow Voters Roll. If you use the card index search on Ancestry using the search term 'Glasgow' it should bring up the record set Glasgow Lanark Electoral Registers 1857 - 1962. I trawled through all the records until I found Garscube Road, but I can  now point you to the exact entry which should make it easier for you to find.
Open up the search screen and put in the name Edward McDonald. This will bring up a list and the attached screenshot shows the one you want.

According to the 1930 US census Margaret immigrated in 1925, but I can't see an obvious entry. When she came back in 1932 to have the baby she was living at 174 New City Road, Glasgow which is listed as the address of her next of kin -father Edward McDonald. She returned to the US in 1933 but there are other visits to Glasgow eg 1956 also to New City Road.

I have found Margaret McDonald on the Outward Passenger Lists on Ancestry. She sailed on the Leviathan on 21 Aug 1926 ( Ancestry have this mistranscribed as 1925). Next of kin is her father Edward of 252 Garscube Road, Glasgow. She is going to a sister Jean McDonald.
