Thank you Isobel, this is a great help.
I will follow this line as it seems the correct one now.
Birth certificate is still baffling though.

Have just managed to find 20 West Cumberland Street on the 1925 Voters Roll. Occupants James A Lyon and Alice G Lyon. Scotlandspeople 1925 valuation has James A Lyon against 16- 20 West Cumberland Street. No listing for a 26 West Cumberland Street.

hi again.

I was wondering if anyone can help a bit more.

I have traced my Dads family forward pretty well but I cant find anything going back the way.
I cant find Edward McDonald (my dads grandad) on anything at all

In 1901 I think Edward is at 9 Caithness Street, Milton, Glasgow (Ancestry)
Edward McDonald age 38, occ Causewayer, born Ireland
Margaret McDonald age 25, wife born Glasgow
Mary Ann McDonald, daughter age 5 born Glasgow
Susan McDonald, daughter age 4 born Glasgow
Ellen McDonald, daughter, age 2 born Glasgow
Margaret McDonald, daughter age 6months born Glasgow

A hint on Ancestry suggests that wife Margaret was nee Boyle and there is a marriage on Scotlandspeople in Milton in 1895 between an Edward McDonald and a Margaret Boyle.

Using the index to 1911 census on Scotlandspeople the family seem to be in Paisley in 1911. Margaret (born 1900) is not with them but other names tally. Ref is 573/1 61/5
Edward age 46
Margaret age 32
Mary Ann age 15
Susanagh age 14
Ellen age 12
Jane age 8 ( this could be the sister Jean that Margaret went to in US)
Elizabeth age 6
Edward age 5
Francis age 3
James age 0

Suggestion on Ancestry that Susan married Francis J Carey and they settled in New York ( there is a possible marriage in Milton in 1922). In 1930 US census Susan's brother Edward McDonald ( b 1906) is shown as living with them.

Can't see anything on Edward prior to 1901 and he looks to have been born just prior to the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland in 1864. If the 1895 marriage is correct then it will give parents, names for both Edward and Margaret and might help you move further back ( at least with Margaret, who seems to have been born in Scotland).

I dont know how you do it but thank you.

I was thinking about what you found earlier and I have been thinking now that my Dads adoptive father may have actually have been his real father.  due to an affair with Margaret.   This makes sense as to the birth certificate and being brought up by his paternal family.  Closely guarded so as not to hurt his Mum or tarnish his dad.

Thank you.  I will now work on this

Susan McDonald/ Carey appears to have made a number of trips across the Atlantic. In 1932 and 1937 she gives her next of kin in U.K. as Her father Edward McDonald living at 174 New City Road, Glasgow ( the same address given by Margaret on her trips home). In 1928 she names Edward as NOK but his address is 40 Grove Street, Glasgow.
If you check Susan's marriage certificate it should confirm  her mother's maiden and if it is indeed Boyle then the 1895 marriage would give you a lot more info. To work back with. Both certificates can be viewed on Scotlandspeople.
