Searching for William Tate and family from Yorkshire

The family arrived in NYC in 1835.  John and Rosanna's oldest son, William, was born in NYC in 1839. By 1850, both John and his brother, Joseph Gibson, appear on a US Census living in Louisville, KY.  Both were butchers.  I have no idea what became of John's siblings.  It's likely that they all stayed in the New York City area.

Forgive my ignorance of US birth certificates - but doesn't William's entry in 1839 give mother's maiden name?  UK ones do

Actually they provide the name that the mother gave them; however, finding a birth certificate is extremely difficult to find because New York State did not start keeping such records until 1881.  I have no idea where in NYC he was born (likely at home).

That was one of the first places I went and was disappointed when I saw that there is no place where births prior to 1881 can be found.  I'm amazed that I've gotten as much information as I have found regarding the Tate family.

Thanks for your assistance.  However, birth records from as early as 1847 (depending on the borough) to as late to 1909 are held at the New York City Municipal Archives.  This does not help me since my ancestor was born in 1839.

Just a thought - William was born prior to NYC records, but what about younger siblings, would they fall within the timescale?

He was the only one born in NYC.  His next youngest sibling, Josephine, was born in 1849 in Jefferson County, Kentucky (KY).  I've written to the Louisville/Jefferson County, KY Clerk for information about Josephine and her younger siblings.
