Searching for William Tate and family from Yorkshire
« on: Thursday 18 January 18 07:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello. I am looking for information about my 6th great grandparents and their families from Yorkshire. His name was William Tate (b. 1793) and married Mary Gibson (b. 1794) who was also from Yorkshire.  In 1835, William and his entire family emigrated to the US via "The Brooklyn".   I would like to be able to find out the names of William and Mary's parents as well as any siblings they might have had.

I tried FamilySearch; however, I found nothing.  Geni also has nothing.  Any assistance is appreciated.

Working from the Banns for the marriage in 1812, William is aged 22, and Mary is 21.  Both are from Selby.

Could this be Mary's baptism at Selby Abbey:

Mary, second daughter of John Gibson, Sailor, son of Joseph Gibson of Selby, Fisherman. and Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Jackson of Selby Currier by Mary his wife, daughter of John Voce of Cawood, Weaver.  Born 4 January, baptised 30 January 1791.

Thank you for this.  FamilySearch lists the Tate family in 1835 regarding their immigration.  They have Mary listed as being born in 1794; however, your information shows that she was baptized in 1791.

Interesting.  Is there any record of William's parents and/or siblings?   I appreciate your help.

I'll work my way through the children:

Selby Abbey - 10 August 1830

Nancy, daughter of William and Mary Tate of Selby.  William is now a Publican.

All baptisms as Selby Abbey:

Robert - 1st son of William Tate, Roper, Illegitimate and Mary daughter of John Gibson of Selby Sailor by Betty daughter of Richard Jackson.  Born and baptised 24 April 1812
John - son of William and Mary Tate of Selby.  Occupation Roper - 26 March 1816
Martha - daughter of William and Mary Tate of Selby.  Occupation Roper - 11 January 1819

I can't see anything for Elizabeth in 1809 BUT I'm wondering whether Elizabeth is the wife of Robert.  :-\

Marriage - St Lawrence, York - 12 August 1833
Robert Tate and Elizabeth Lawrence Jackson, both of this parish, married by Banns.

Baptisms at Selby Abbey
William, son of Robert and Elizabeth Tate.  Occupation Tailor.  27 January 1834
Thomas, son of Robert and Elizabeth Tate.  Occupation Tailor.  9 May 1835
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

We have Joseph Gibson Tate baptized 4-14-1819 and Martha baptized on 1-11-1819.  If twins, why are they not baptized together?  The three months gap means that they cannot be anything but twins.
