How do I get rid of an old PC tower.
« on: Thursday 18 January 18 12:39 GMT (UK) »
I've been having a clear out and come across an old, old Tiny PC tower that I failed to get rid of last time I had a clear out.  I realise I'll have to take it to the 'tip' but not sure how to make sure no one has access to any info it might have on it. (goodness knows what - after all these years!).

I remember someone telling me I should take a sledgehammer to it, but I don't have a sledgehammer nor the energy to use one!

Is there something inside (drive? - sorry, totally ignorant of these things) that is perhaps small enough for me to smash with a hammer, if I can perhaps unscrew the back and get at it?

How do others get rid of old PC towers?
HELP!!!

My husband opens ours up and removes the hard drive (you can see how to do this on YouTube).  We keep the old hard drives in a shoe box and dump the rest at the local tip.

I hope this helps.

Hi jillruss
Yourself or someone should be able to access into the unit to remove the hard drive. Enabling you to then decide on the data disposal of.
Hope this is helpful. JUST J.

It is only the hard drive you may need to destroy, I did mine with an ordinary hammer. Being a weak and feeble femail not  too much effort needed thank goodness. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks, all. I've been putting this off for years - never thought of You Tube!! I shall have a go later - hammer at the ready!

Incidentally, do you think I'm okay just putting old video tapes in the regular wheelie bin?

You might want to do some surfing after you see these 2016 prices:-

"old VHS tapes are just part of a growing band of old technology now being collected like antiques – leading them to coin the phrase “antech” to describe the new market.
here are the 10 most valuable VHS tapes:

Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks (JVI) £1,500
The Beast in Heat (JVI) £1,200
    Betrayed (Taboo) £1,100
    Celestine (GO) £1,100
The Legend of Hillbilly John (Rainbow) £1,000
Journey Into Beyond (Citycenta GO) £1,000
    Lemora, Lady Dracula (IFS) £900
Don't Open the Window (Films of the 80s) £900
    Flesh Eaters (Knockout) £800
    Black Decameron (Intervision) £800"

Walt Disney VHS tapes are also selling as antiques.
